15 foods you shouldn't keep in the refrigerator

After shopping, most groceries are put in the refrigerator to be on the safe side so that they stay fresh for a long time and do not spoil. Often even food such as eggs, ketchup or oil, even though they cannot be found on the refrigerated shelves in the supermarket.

In such cases, you should take an example from the supermarket, because not all edibles benefit from the low temperatures.

These 15 foods have no place in the refrigerator:

1. Paprika

Bell peppers lose their freshness and crispness in the refrigerator. You can almost see how quickly they get wrinkled. It is therefore best to keep them at room temperature in the kitchen cupboard or in a paper bag.

2. olive oil

Anyone who thinks it is a good idea to keep their olive oil in the refrigerator is wrong. It quickly becomes flaky there, which looks very unsavory. It should be stored in the kitchen cupboard, protected from light. It lasts for several weeks without any problems.

3. Butter

Butter from the refrigerator is often too hard to spread smoothly on bread. Thanks to its high fat and low water content, it is, unlike other dairy products, less susceptible to bacterial growth and can also be stored outside the refrigerator. Special airtight butter dishes are best suited for this, because air ensures that the butter spoils more quickly.

In summer, however, you should not store butter outside the refrigerator, as it can quickly become too warm in the apartment and the butter then becomes rancid.

4. Pickles

Sour cucumbers contain enough sodium, a natural preservative, that makes them durable for a long time. The only reason to keep them in the refrigerator is because you like to eat them chilled. Even opened glasses can be stored outside without any problems.

5. Nuts

Nuts like higher temperatures, as this is the only way to develop their full nutty taste and should therefore not be stored in the refrigerator. In addition, some types of nuts have the peculiarity of absorbing the smells from the refrigerator.

6. Bread and other baked goods

Many still store their bread in the refrigerator to keep it from getting old. But the cold quickly dries it up. Better to keep it in a bread box or a dark cupboard. Make sure, however, that the air can circulate there to avoid the formation of mold.

7. Chocolate

Chocolate doesn’t like temperatures that are too high or too low. A white film quickly forms on it in the refrigerator because the cocoa butter it contains solidifies. While this is not harmful and does not affect the taste, it looks unsavory. In addition, chocolate absorbs the surrounding smells from the refrigerator and therefore belongs in the candy drawer.

8. Peaches

Hard peaches are often not quite ripe and take a few days to get ready to eat. However, if you put them in the refrigerator, the ripening process will be interrupted. Store them at room temperature, unwashed and with the stem side down so they can ripen.

9. Sauces

Ketchup, mustard, and other sauces often contain vinegar, salt, and sugar, which are great preservatives. Therefore, they do not have to be opened in the refrigerator, but can be stored in a closet protected from light, where they can be kept for several months without any problems.

10. Lemons

Lemons and other citrus fruits come from warm regions and cannot tolerate the cold. Putting them in the refrigerator exposes them to cold shock, which can cause them to stop ripening and become wrinkled. Better store them open and in contact with air.

11. Basil

Loose basil stalks do not belong in the refrigerator, otherwise their leaves will turn dark. To protect them from wilting, you can put them in a glass of water and cover them with a plastic bag. Herbs such as parsley or coriander, on the other hand, are easy to store in the refrigerator.

12. Exotic fruits

Exotic fruits like bananas, mangos or papayas like it warm and quickly turn brown and mushy in the refrigerator. You feel much more comfortable in a bowl on the kitchen table.

13. Carrots

Carrots should be stored a little cooler, but they quickly become limp and unsightly in the refrigerator. If you keep them outside, you should be careful not to put them next to ripe tomatoes, pears or apples, as they can otherwise develop a bitter, unpleasant taste. To be able to keep them in the refrigerator for weeks, put them in a glass with water. This way they stay fresh and crisp for a long time.

14. Cucumbers

Fresh cucumbers should not be stored too cool either, because they are sensitive and develop wrinkled skin and water spots in the refrigerator. They feel much more comfortable at room temperature and also last longer.

15. Salami

Due to their production method, whole salamis can usually be kept for several months without refrigeration and do not need to be stored in the refrigerator. It is best to hang them in a slightly cooler, well-ventilated place. Salami slices and packaged sausage products, on the other hand, should be kept refrigerated and consumed within a few days.
